Nadan Chammanthi Podi (Roasted Chutney Powder)
Hello Friends,
Today i would like to share about the ever drooling side dish of Keralites, the Nadan Chammanthi Podi. Personally i just loved this dish as my mom used to always prepare and pack it for me whenever i go back to my college after holidays. I am pretty sure that almost all Kerala families make this dish and preserve it. Moreover this is definitely one of the unavoidable bottled goodies for all NRIs along with other snacks right?.
INGREDIENTS
Coconut shreds : 2 cups
Urid dhal : 150gms
Dried red chilly: 15 in number
Curry leaves : 2 sprigs
Tamarind :1 large piece
Jaggery shreds : 3 tsp.
Asafetida powder : 1 tsp
Salt : As per required
INSTRUCTIONS
- Heat a heavy bottomed wide pan, add urid dhal and dried red chilies. Roast it separately until it changes its color and then allow it to cool.
- Add the required coconut shreds and curry leaves in a pan and roast until the coconut turns brown in color, by stirring continuously in a medium fame. Once it turns brown add asafetida powder and mix it well.
- After cooling the roasted coconut shreds, transfer it into a mixer jar and grind it coarsely. Likewise grind all the roasted ingredients separately with the coconut.
- Add 3 tsp. jaggery and one large piece of tamarind to the mixture and grind it until it turns to coarse powder.
- Add salt according to the requirement and mix it well. Preserve it in a tight container.
- Serve it with rice, idly and dosa.
